Been into decorating this week. Getting very obsessed with furniture and wallpapers and that sort of thing. Anyways spotted this adorable suitcase side table online!

It’s one of the many beautiful things that have been refabbed by Fernseed, a cool re-use, re-love furniture shop over on Dimond Ave right off of Macathur. I went down there to check it out tonite.

The owner Kristine Dang is really nice and friendly. The stuff in the store is really beautiful. Lots of local artists using reclaimed material, plenty of cool shabby chic pieces, and quite a few steals. I really enjoyed talking to her and checking out the wares. After an hour of consideration I decided that the $65 I spent on the table would not only guarantee a unique conversation piece that represented the quirky design elements Flippant and I share, it would also support a local business which I’m excited to have within walking distance.

We hope to find the time to write full reviews and such in the near future. In the meantime, here are a few books that we’ve enjoyed over the past few months.

Flippant recommends Carter Beats the Devil, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, The Lazarus Project, 2666, What Is The What, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Without consultation nor permission, Flippant believes AXE will currently recommend My Life in France (Julia Child) and The Glass Castle: A Memoir. (Note that AXE would likely not recommend 2666.)

Soderbergh’s “Che” is certainly a major disappointment. Benicio Del Toro is excellent in his role, but alas the film is startlingly uninteresting. Not only is the picture slow and plodding, but the viewer also doesn’t learn much about Che, Cuba or Bolivia. There is very little context provided throughout most of the 4+ hour film. Actually a rather impressive feat when you think about it.

When the naked truth is exposed by a so-called crazy person, isn’t the truth itself, and those who take it to heart, brought into question? I actually enjoyed the picture, but for the last twenty minutes or so.

Mission Minis – A Dollar’s Worth of Delight

A friend recently introduced me to the handheld goodness of Mission Minis tiny tasty treats. Run by Brandon Arnovick, Mission Minis are delightful tiny cupcakes that are every bit as good as they look.

I indulged in Ruby Red Velvet, moist and sweet without being overwhelming. Two Aztec Chocolate, a dark bitter chocolate, still rich but not milky, and then a Classic Vanilla. The Classic Vanilla is made with cream cheese, which my friend was not overly enthusiastic about but which I felt gave the vanilla a richness it deserved. Also it cut the cloying or drying taste of vanilla cake I’ve had in the past.

The frosting was also delish! You can obtain these treats at a variety of outlets but a store is set to open soon at 3168 22nd Street. Be on the lookout for Mission Minis, or feel free to check them out at www.missionminis.com, free San Francisco delivery for orders of $25 or more. $15 /dozen. Also, I guess the owner delivers the treats on a golf cart. Go figure.
